The Backyard Hockey War

Growing up, my brother Andy and I were obsessed with hockey - watching it, playing street hockey, and spending hours playing in our backyard. Our dad built us a wooden hockey net with a wire mesh, and every day, Andy suited up as goalie while I fired shots at him. No matter how well he padded up, I always seemed to find the one unprotected spot, leaving him bruised and frustrated.

One day, after yet another painful shot, we joined a game with the neighborhood kids. In the heat of the moment, I grabbed Andy's mask and let it snap back at him. Furious, he snapped - literally. Everyone scattered as he smashed our beloved wooden net into pieces and hurled the remains onto the garage roof.

That evening, our dad came home, glanced out the window, and casually asked, "What's on top of the garage?"

I answered "What's left of the hockey net."

Andy took the blame that night - and paid the price.

The Lawn Dart Incident at my Aunt and Uncle's Cottage

During summers at my aunt and uncle's New Hampshire cottage, we enjoyed lawn darts—large metal darts designed to stick into the lawn. Despite warnings, my brother Andy aimed them into the trees. After a few throws, one dart fell and struck our cousin Mary's head, ending our lawn dart games there. Our cousin Mary thankfully wasn’t seriously hurt.

The Stunt that Never Happened

Growing up, Evil Knievel was our hero. Inspired by this daring jumps, I had a brilliant idea - I'd set up a massive stunt for my brother Andy, charge admission, and make a fortune.

The plan? Andy would start at the top of our steep street, pedal full speed, veer into the neighbor's driveway, hit a homemade ramp, and (hopefully) land safely in the yard. I even convinced him to wear a helmet.

Everything was set - until Mom found out. She shut it down instantly, calling us crazy. I was furious about losing my big payday, Andy was crushed that he wouldn't be a stunt legend, and Mom? She was just happy he wasn't headed to the hospital.

The Locker Room Prank

Back in high school, my brother Andy and I played CYO basketball. One day, while he was changing before a game, my friends and I pulled a classic prank - we grabbed him ( completely naked ) and tossed him into the cheerleader's locker room.

Andy was mortified. The girls were stunned. And at the time? We thought it was hilarious. Looking back, it was definitely mean - but teenage boys aren't exactly known for their wisdom.

The Shot Heard 'Round the Court

Years after high school, my brother Andy, our friend Brian, and I were playing basketball at a local gym. After a few losses, Andy gave us a pep talk: 'Stop rushing shots - let's move the ball and get the best look."

We all agreed. Then, the next game started. Andy took one step over half - court and launched a shot. Brick.

Brian and I didn't get mad - we just lost it. We laughed so hard we couldn't focus, and we didn't win another game all night.

Whether taking the blame, taking a hit or taking an ill - advised shot, he made every moment legendary. Looking back, those chaotic, hilarious, and sometimes painful memories are what made growing up with him unforgettable.
