My afternoon routine is designed to keep my energy up, support healthy aging, and complement the habits I follow each morning.
Like my morning routine, I didn't develop these habits all at once.
I added them gradually over time as I learned what worked best for me.
Remember, you don't need to do everything I do.
Start with one or two healthy habits and build from there.
A Nutritious Afternoon Snack
Most afternoons I enjoy a bowl of plain yogurt mixed with:
- Cinnamon
- A small drizzle of honey
- Raisins
- Chia seeds
I mix in the chia seeds about 30 minutes before eating to give the chia seeds time to absorb moisture and soften.
Why I Include These Foods
Each ingredient offers unique nutritional benefits.
- Yogurt provides protein, calcium, and probiotics that support digestive and bone health.
- Cinnamon contains antioxidants and may help support healthy blood sugar levels.
- Honey provides natural sweetness along with antioxidants. Because it is still a form of sugar, I use it in moderation.
- Raisins provide fiber, potassium, and natural energy.
- Chia seeds are rich in fiber, plant-based omega-3 fatty acids, protein, and minerals.
Healthy Fats
If I have a salad with lunch, I choose a dressing made with olive oil or avocado oil rather than one containing highly processed seed oils whenever possible.
Rather than worrying about a single ingredient, I focus on eating fewer ultra-processed foods and more whole foods.
Keeping My Mind Active
One unusual habit I enjoy is smelling fresh rosemary for a few moments during the afternoon. Although research is still developing, some studies suggest that the aroma of rosemary may help support memory, concentration, and alertness. Whether or not it provides measurable benefits, I find it to be a relaxing part of my day.
Staying Active Throughout the Week
In addition to my morning routine, I stay active with regular exercise throughout the week.
Daily
- Hand grip exercises
- Deep breathing exercises
- Squats
- Reverse sit-ups
- Crunches
- Bicycle crunches
Strength Training (2 Days Per Week)
I lift heavy weights using lower repetitions, focusing on:
- Chest
- Back
- Shoulders
- Biceps
- Triceps
- Core
- Rucking (3 Days Per Week)
Three days each week I go rucking around my neighborhood while wearing a 35 lbs. weight vest. My route also includes climbing the stairs in my home several times, making each session last about an hour. Rucking has become one of my favorite forms of exercise because it combines cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance while allowing me to enjoy being outdoors.
Consistency Over Perfection
I've found that healthy aging isn't about finding one perfect habit—it's about practicing many small habits consistently.
Some days I do more than others, but I always try to keep moving, eat nutritious foods, and continue building a lifestyle that supports long-term health and independence.
