Does Time Speed Up as People Age, or Is That Just Perception?

Hashtags

Every year seems to move faster than the last — a complaint I hear from nearly everyone in my generation, myself included.

Summers that used to stretch endlessly now feel like they're gone before they start.

So I went looking for an actual explanation: is there something happening to how our minds process time as we get older, or are we just imagining it?

Time itself, of course, doesn't change — a year is still a year.

What changes is how our brains encode and later recall that time, and researchers who study time perception have found consistent evidence that older adults genuinely experience time as passing more quickly than younger adults do.

This isn't just anecdotal grumbling; it shows up reliably across surveys and lab studies asking people to estimate how quickly a set period felt like it passed.

One of the leading explanations is refreshingly simple math: a single year is a much smaller fraction of your total lived experience at 60 than it was at 6.

To a six-year-old, a year is a fifth of their entire life; to someone in their sixties, that same year is barely one-sixtieth of their life.

Because we tend to judge the length of a period relative to how much life we've already lived, each additional year naturally feels proportionally shorter than the one before it — even though the clock hasn't sped up at all.

The Role of Novelty, Routine, and Memory Density

The proportional theory explains part of it, but researchers point to something just as important: how much new, memorable experience fills a given stretch of time.

Childhood and young adulthood are packed with firsts — first job, first home, first child — and the brain lays down dense, detailed memories during novel experiences.

As adult life settles into routine, fewer distinct memories are formed, so when we look back on a year full of similar days, it feels like it passed in a blur simply because there's less to recall.

If novelty is what stretches our sense of time, then deliberately introducing more of it may be the most practical countermeasure. People who travel, learn new skills, or regularly break their routines tend to report that time feels like it's moving more slowly and that they remember more of their year.

Try a new route, restaurant, or hobby regularly instead of defaulting to routine.
Take a class or learn a skill — novel learning is especially effective at creating dense memories.
Travel, even locally, disrupts the sameness that makes months blur together.

So the feeling that time speeds up with age isn't just in your head in a dismissive sense — it's a well-documented result of both the math of proportional time and the way our brains store fewer distinct memories once routine sets in.

The encouraging part is that this isn't entirely out of our control.

Chasing a little more novelty, even in small doses, seems to be the closest thing science has found to a dial for how full — and how long — our years feel.

I've often felt like time speeds up as I get older—but a few months back, a trip through the Scandinavian capitals changed that. Wandering through Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, and Helsinki, fully present in new streets and new routines, time actually seemed to slow down. It made me a believer: stepping outside our everyday patterns and taking in something unfamiliar doesn't just make for a good trip—it genuinely reshapes how we experience time passing.
