When it comes to fruits and vegetables, knowing the pros and cons of fresh, frozen and canned options can help you make smarter choices.

Here's a breakdown to keep your meals nutritious and delicious.

Fresh

  • Why it's Great: Fresh produce packs a punch of water-soluble vitamins like B and C. Seasonal varieties also tend to be tastier and more nutritious.
  • Quick Tip: Grab fresh fruits and veggies for portable snacks that keep you energized.


Frozen

  • The Perks: Frozen fruits and veggies are picked at their prime and quickly frozen to lock in nutrients. This process halts oxidation ( so no browning!) and keeps your food fresher for longer. 
  • Watch Out For: While they retain most vitamins, some frozen options may sneak in salt - always check the label.


Canned

  • Budget Friendly: Canned produce is affordable and has a long shelf life. Look for options labeled 'no salt added" or "packed in water" to avoid excess sodium and sugar. 
  • Nutrient Notes: Canning involves heating, which can lower nutrient content. Added salt, sugar, or preservatives are common culprits, so choose wisely!


Canned vs. Frozen: The Nutrition Faceoff

  • Canned: Loses some nutrients during processing and may contain added salt or sugar. Avoid heavy syrups in canned fruits as they are sugar bombs. 
  • Frozen: Blanched and flash-frozen produce retains most nutrients and is closer in quality to fresh.

I avoid any potential issues with fruits and vegetables ( BPA, Sugar Added Heavy Syrups etc. ) by only buying and consuming fresh. I also wash all fruits and vegetables before eating them or preparing them for cooking. I don't have options to purchase baked beans or tuna in anything other than a can so I don't have a choice there. In my opinion fresh fruits and vegetables taste so much better than canned or frozen options. Weekly I steam broccoli, spinach and green beans then just add some butter and they taste great. I plan out the fruits and vegetables I am going to eat for the week so that nothing goes bad before I can consume it. Since eating just fresh fruits and vegetables for the past 2 years my digestion has gotten so much better.
