How to Prevent Shoulder Injuries While Working Out After 50

Hashtags

My shoulders were the first joint that ever really humbled me. I could still push through a tough leg day, but a careless overhead press in my late fifties left me unable to reach behind my back for almost three weeks. That experience sent me down a research rabbit hole into why shoulders seem to break down before other joints — and what actually protects them.

Why Shoulders Become More Vulnerable With Age

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body, which is exactly what makes it the least stable. It relies almost entirely on a small group of muscles and tendons — the rotator cuff — to hold the joint in place, and those tissues lose elasticity and blood supply as we age.

Decades of repetitive motion, old unrehabilitated injuries, and simply less time spent reaching overhead in daily life all combine to make the shoulder one of the first joints where age-related wear becomes noticeable.

A proper shoulder warm-up isn't optional once you're past 50 — it's the single change that made the biggest difference for me. The goal is to get blood flow and full range of motion into the joint before you load it with any real weight.

Arm circles and band pull-aparts for 1–2 minutes before any upper-body session.
Wall slides or scapular retractions to wake up the muscles around the shoulder blade.
Light, slow overhead reaches through a full pain-free range before adding resistance.

Most shoulder problems trace back to a strength imbalance — the big pressing muscles (chest and front shoulder) get all the attention while the small rotator cuff and upper back muscles that stabilize the joint are neglected. Building those smaller muscles is what actually keeps the joint centered and protected under load.

External rotation exercises with a light band, done slowly and with control.
Rows and reverse flyes to balance out pressing movements and strengthen the upper back.
Avoid pushing overhead pressing weight up too quickly — the rotator cuff builds strength much more slowly than the larger muscle groups.

Small form corrections prevent a surprising number of shoulder injuries. Keeping elbows slightly in front of the body rather than flared out during presses, and avoiding locking the arm out aggressively overhead, both reduce stress on the joint capsule.

Pain that lingers more than a day or two after a session, a pinching sensation when lifting the arm sideways, or noticeable weakness reaching overhead are all signs worth having a physical therapist look at rather than working through.

Shoulders don't usually fail all at once — they wear down gradually through years of skipped warm-ups and neglected stabilizer muscles. The good news is that the fix isn't complicated: warm up deliberately, train the small muscles as seriously as the big ones, and listen early when something feels off. My own recovery taught me that a few minutes of prevention is far cheaper than weeks of not being able to reach the top shelf.
