Turmeric: The Golden Healer with a Vibrant Twist
Turmeric isn't just a spice; it's a culinary and health superstar. This golden-orange root, a close cousin of ginger, has been a staple in Asian kitchens and traditional medicine for centuries. Packed with flavor and potential, it's time to uncover what turmeric can - and can't - do for you.

Why Turmeric Shines
The secret lies in curcumin, it's powerful active ingredient which boasts antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to:
  • Combat joint pain and stiffness
  • Soothe inflammation from arthritis, colitis, and more
  • Protect against cellular damage caused by free radicals

Some studies even suggest turmeric may improve mood, heart health, and blood sugar levels, though more research is needed.

The Bioavailability Boost
Curcumin doesn't absorb well in the body, but pair it with black pepper, and the compound piperine in the black pepper boosts absorption by a staggering 2,000%. So skip the pills and add turmeric to your meals for the safest benefits.

What Turmeric Might Help With

  • Arthritis: May reduce joint pain and inflammation
  • PMS: Studies suggest relief from cramps and symptoms
  • Blood Sugar: Could help regulate levels in prediabetes
  • Hearth Health: Shows promise but needs more research
  • Brain Health: Anti-inflammatory properties spark Alzheimer's research
  • Cancer: Lab studies show tumor growth inhibition, but human benefits remain unclear
Use with Care
While Turmeric in food is safe, supplements can be tricky. High does of curcumin may:
  • Interfere with medications like blood thinners or chemotherapy
  • Increase the risk of kidney stones in predisposed individuals.
Always consult your doctor before trying supplements.

Make It a Kitchen Star
Add Turmeric to curries, soups, smoothies, or tea for it's earthy flavor and sunny hue.

Turmeric Tea Recipe
  1. Combine 2 tbsp. chopped turmeric root (or 2 tsp powder) with 1-2 cups water.
  2. Boil, simmer for 5 minutes, and strain.
  3. Add honey or lemon for extra zing.
Curried Pumpkin-Butternut Squash Soup
  1. Roast pumpkin and squash
  2. Saute with shallots, curry paste and turmeric
  3. Simmer with broth and coconut milk.
  4. Blend for a golden, creamy delight.

The Bottom Line
Turmeric is no miracle cure, but it's a tasty, natural way to support health. Whether easing inflammation or adding depth to your dishes, this golden spice is worth it's weight in flavor. Ready to stir some sunshine into your life?

I have 2 cups of Ginger Green Tea daily followed by 1 cup of Turmeric Tea. I prepare my Turmeric Teas as follows:
  1. Boil my kettle
  2. In a pan add fresh cut up Ginger and Thyme
  3. Take the boiled water and pour it into the pan
  4. Let the Ginger and Thyme steep in the pan for 15 minutes
  5. Heat up the pan for a bit, shut off the stove then strain the contents of the pan into a cup
  6. In the cup add 1/4 teaspoon of Turmeric, 1/4 teaspoon of Black Pepper, 1/2 teaspoon of Cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon of Honey
  7. Add a Green Tea bag, let the tea steep, discard the bag, then mix well and drink.
  8. As the Turmeric tends to settle to the bottom of the cup stir the contents well before taking the last sip to ensure you consume all of the Turmeric.
I often brush my teeth after consuming this mixture to ensure the Turmeric doesn't stain my teeth.
