Stay on Track and Enjoy the Holidays: Simple Strategies for Weight Control

1. Manage Stress, Not with Snacks

Holiday hustle got you frazzled? Stress can lead to overeating, so find calming alternatives. Take 10 minutes for a walk, a hot shower, or a quick catch-up with a friend. Schedule this "me time" like an appointment - it's that important.

2. Skip the Starvation Strategy

Thinking of skipping meals to "save up" for a big dinner? Bad idea. You'll likely overeat later. Instead, stick to smaller, balanced meals earlier in the day. Pack you plate with protein and veggies to stay satisfied.

3. Eat in the Right Order

Start meals with a salad or veggies, then lean protein. Save carbs and sweets for last - you'll be fuller and less tempted to overindulgence.

4. Don't Drink Your Calories

Sugary sodas, fancy lattes, and cocktails can stealthily add up. Opt for water, unsweetened drinks, or a spirit with seltzer. And remember: alcohol lowers inhibitions, so pace yourself with one drink at a time.

5. Treat Yourself (Within Reason)

Lover dessert? Have it! Depriving yourself can backfire. Savor a slice of pie or a few bites of cake - then move on. This won't be your last chance for sweets!

6. Practice Saying "No"

You don't need to sample everything on the buffet. Politely decline if you're not genuinely hungry. Saying no to your cousin's famous cake isn't rejected her - it's prioritizing you.

7. Eat Mindfully

Avoid mindless munching. Sit down, take a deep breath, and focus on your food - its flavor, texture, and your level of fullness. Mindful eating helps prevent overindulgence.

8. Move After Meals

Skip the post-dinner couch slump. A quick walk, some dancing, or ever a snowball fight can boost digestion and burn calories. Small bouts of activity add up fast!

9. Play the Long Game

Remember your "why" - less joint pain, better energy, or fitting into that outfit you love. Write down your goals and revisit them if you feel tempted. And don't sweat the occasional splurge - just get back on track the next day.

Finally, enjoy the season. A little planning helps you stay in control, so you can fully embrace the joy of family, friends, and festivities!

My personal approach to the holidays and weight gain is to not worry about weight during the holidays but only after. During the holidays I don't weigh myself, I eat a normal breakfast, eat a very small lunch such as maybe just a bowl of soup or a salad then I eat the holiday feast with everyone. During these days I eat bran cereal for breakfast to ensure I have fiber in my diet and everything keeps moving.

The week after the holidays I will either do an intermittent fast by eliminating lunch or if I do have lunch it will be limited to soup, or a salad or a piece of fruit. With Rucking or Weight-Lifting again I will drop anywhere from 1 to 3 lbs. in the week. Depending on how much I put on during the holidays or how much I want to drop I may continue this for more weeks.

I lost 50 lbs. and have kept it off for 2 years so my weight is something that I watch closely. It is fine to have some cheat days around the holidays but once New Years is done I will be back to healthy eating, healthy living and putting posts on my Website, Facebook and YouTube detailing my progress in remaining healthy and thriving.
