There are moments in life that you never forget—times when you just know things are going to go your way. Call it a sixth sense, being "in the zone," or simply feeling it.
Over the years, I've learned that confidence doesn't come out of nowhere. It's built through repetition, preparation, consistency, and believing in yourself. Whether you're shooting basketballs, lifting weights, or rebuilding your health later in life, the feeling of confidence is earned long before anyone else notices it.

The Trick Shots That Shut Them Up
When I was in junior high, one of my classmates kept insisting I couldn't play basketball. What he didn't know was that I had spent years practicing every day, even shooting in freezing temperatures and challenging myself to make difficult trick shots.
One day at a local park, I knew I couldn't miss. I started making shots over my head from the corners, over my head from the top of the key, sitting on the court, and even lying on my back. My classmates couldn't believe what they were seeing, and the laughter said it all. The classmate who doubted me never questioned my basketball skills again.
The Half-Court Confidence
A few years after high school, I was playing in a park league game. Just before halftime, I called for the ball with only seconds remaining. For some reason, I knew the shot was going in.
I launched the ball from half court, watched it sail through the air, and then heard the swish as it dropped cleanly through the net.
Some shots, you just know are going in.
The Perfect Night on the Court
One winter evening, I joined a group of older players for pickup basketball. We expected to lose quickly, but they played beautiful team basketball—constant movement, crisp passing, solid screens, and always finding the open player.
That night, they kept finding me, and everything I shot seemed to go in. We kept winning game after game, and I never experienced another basketball night quite like it.
It was pure basketball magic.

In the early 1990s, I reached a point where I was tired of being overweight and feeling out of shape. I made a commitment to myself: for one full year, I would lift weights six days a week.
Every evening before dinner, I headed downstairs to my bench and weights.
The beginning wasn't easy. During one workout, the collar on a dumbbell slipped off while I was lifting overhead, causing the weight plates to fall and strike me on the head. It was a painful reminder that strength training demands respect, proper equipment, and focus.
Instead of discouraging me, the experience strengthened my determination to reach my goal.
One year later, I was in the best shape of my life. I weighed around 220 pounds, benched 315 pounds for repetitions, performed preacher curls with a 110-pound barbell, and completed dumbbell flyes with 60-pound dumbbells.
What I remember most isn't the numbers—it's how I felt.
Before many workouts, I was tired from the day. After each workout, I felt energized, confident, and ready to take on anything. The sense of accomplishment was incredible.
Looking back, I wish I had taken more pictures because my wife still doesn't believe I was ever that strong!
Getting into the best shape of your life changes more than your body. You carry yourself differently, your confidence grows, everyday tasks become easier, and mentally you begin to believe you're capable of accomplishing far more than you once thought possible.

People often think confidence is something you're born with. I don't believe that.
Confidence comes from doing the work when nobody is watching.
- It comes from practicing long after everyone else has gone home.
- It comes from waking up early to exercise.
- It comes from eating healthy when it's easier not to.
- It comes from choosing your workout before entertainment.
- It comes from staying consistent when progress feels slow.
- Most of all, it comes from refusing to give up.
Those moments when you feel unstoppable aren't usually luck. They're the result of hundreds or even thousands of small decisions that prepared you for that moment.
