The Power of Blinking: Protect Your Eyes in the Digital Age
Why Blinking Matters
Blinking is a simple yet essential function that keeps your eyes healthy. Every blink lubricates the eyes, removes debris, and delivers oxygen. However, with increasing screen time, many of us blink less, leading to eye strain, dryness and discomfort.____________________________________________________How Screen Time Affects Blinking
Studies show that while the average person blinks 15-20 times per minute, this rate drops significantly when using digital devices. Worse, many blinks become incomplete, preventing a full spread of tears across the cornea. This can cause:
- Dry Eyes: Insufficient moisture leads to irritation, a gritty sensation, and burning
- Eye Fatigue & Strain: Reduced blinking results in tired, achy eyes, affecting focus and productivity.
- Increased Risk of Infections: Infrequent blinking disrupts the tear film, allowing bacteria to accumulate.
- Blurry Vision & Light Sensitivity: A lack of oxygen to the cornea can lead to swelling and discomfort.

How to Blink More & Protect Your Eyes
- Follow the 20-20-20 Rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
- Blink Consciously: Make a habit of fully closing your eyes every few minutes.
- Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports tear production.
- Use Artificial Tears: Lubricating eye drops help prevent dryness.
- Adjust Your Screen Position: Keep screens at eye level and maintain a comfortable distance.
- Take regular breaks: Give your eyes rest from prolonged screen exposure.

I have an eye issue I am dealing with where I have a small amount of blood leaking into my right eye which is making the vision in that eye blurry. The left eye is clear. On my yearly eye exam it was found 2 years ago but then it seemed to have cleared up 6 weeks later but in this year's exam 3 weeks ago swelling was found.
The eye doctor initially thought this issue might be from straining as I told him I was lifting heavy with little rest between each lift.
I saw an eye specialist last week and until I see a retina specialist in April I will be lifting much lighter at home with dumbbells instead of with machines in the gym however I will do floor exercises such as push-ups, planks, crunches etc. and I will ruck 6 days a week instead of 3 as I don't feel that type of exercise will put stress on my eye.
Long hours on my laptop working on my website may have also made the situation worse so I may have to scale back temporarily on the amount of posting I do.
There are treatments for this issue so hopefully by the summer everything will be resolved though I will not take a chance anymore on lifting heavy at the gym.____________________________________________________
