In a previous post, "Another day in the life of a Retiree 10/10/2024," I detailed how my wife and I were dealing with a new dishwasher. We didn't receive a power cord with the new dishwasher, and the man delivering the new dishwasher said he couldn't take the cord off the old dishwasher, which was on the truck, so that we could put it on the new dishwasher. Due to this, we went to Home Depot and got a new power cord. Watching a YouTube video, we took apart the front of the dishwasher, and after about 3 hours, we had the power cord connected.

We still had the hose connected to the water for the old dishwasher, so we thought we could use this hose on the new dishwasher. Once the power cord was plugged in, the water was turned on, and the water went all over the floor. The old hose couldn't be used for the new dishwasher, so we got a new hose, installed it and finally the dishwasher is now running.

We thought this was the end of our problems, but our clothes washer also broke and couldn't be fixed. We ordered a new washer, which took 4 days to get delivered; however, the men who delivered it said they couldn't install it because our water shut-off was leaking. We ordered a new water shut-off from Amazon, then watched another YouTube video, and we were able to install the new water shut-off, and the washer is now running.

Lessons Learned:

  1. I swear, machines communicate with each other so that they can synchronize their breakdowns
  2. Must always check that parts like power cords and water hoses, which you would think would come with a new dishwasher, are included or need to be purchased separately
  3. Though the wife was frustrated at each setback during our battle with the machines, she didn't channel Bruce Lee a second time
  4. It is amazing how fast every piece of clothing gets dirty when a washer is not available, and you have to go to the laundromat.
  5. YouTube videos are lifesavers, though people making these videos need to be sure as much as possible when recording that their hands are not in the way.
  6. There are many settings on the new clothes washer, so we may need to contact MIT or Harvard for help washing our clothes.

Below is our new and fully functional dishwasher, the water shutoff that we needed to replace and the new and fully functional clothes washer.
