When many people hear the word "bedsores," they assume it only affects people in nursing homes.
While more common in older, frail individuals, pressure ulcers can form at any age due to limited mobility, poor circulation, or extended periods sitting, in bed, or in a wheelchair.
This type of injury affects millions of adults every year, especially older adults with limited mobility, making prevention one of the most important aspects of healthy aging.
Understanding the warning signs can help prevent a small problem from becoming a serious one.

Several specific issues accelerate the development of pressure injuries:
- Limited Mobility: Paralysis, stroke recovery, or severe joint stiffness that restricts movement. It can also occur as you age from sitting for long periods of time
- Underlying Conditions: Diseases that weaken circulation or slow down the body's natural healing process, such as diabetes.
- Incontinence: Extended exposure to urine or stool severely damages the skin’s protective barrier, increasing the risk of breakdown.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: A lack of hydration or protein severely weakens skin integrity.
- Loss of Sensory Perception: Nerve damage that prevents you from feeling the discomfort of sitting in one position for too long.

According to the Mayo Clinic, caregivers or the person themselves should inspect dependent skin areas—including the tailbone, heels, hips, and elbows—daily for unusual redness, blisters, or skin discoloration.
I experienced this recently when I went back to work. Previously, when I worked, I could sit for hours without any issues, but since I went back to work at the beginning of this year, I have had occasional issues with a sore tailbone and sore skin around the area.
Now, instead of working for 90 minutes to 2 hours without getting up, I make it a habit to get out of my chair every hour for at least a few minutes. This has resulted in a big improvement.

Practical preventative measures include:
- Regular Repositioning: Change positions at least every two hours when in bed, and shift weight every 15 minutes when sitting.
- Skin Care: Gently wash and dry the skin, keeping it clean and free from moisture buildup. Use moisture-barrier creams for incontinence.
- Support Surfaces: Use specialized mattresses, cushions, or foam wedges to relieve pressure on sensitive, bony areas.
- Nutrition: Eat a balanced diet rich in protein, and stay well hydrated to support tissue repair.
- Stay Active Whenever Possible: Even short walks or standing for a few minutes every hour can reduce prolonged pressure on the skin.

Every individual's situation is unique. If you are caring for a loved one or yourself, monitoring these risk factors and practicing daily skin checks are vital steps to maintaining comfort and health.
If you are managing specific challenges like limited mobility or underlying conditions, tailored support and consultation with a medical professional can help you build an effective defense against pressure injuries.
Unfortunately, as we age, our skin thins but the good new is that most pressure injuries are preventable. Small daily habits such as moving regularly, staying hydrated, eating enough protein, and paying attention to early skin changes can make a tremendous difference.
