As it is summer and the middle of the baseball season, I would like to repost content I published on March 11, 2025, but which I have updated about one of my baseball heroes growing up.
Growing up, I was always active - basketball, street hockey, you name it. But baseball? That was the first sport I played and a game I really enjoyed. I played Little League for a few years, though I wasn't very good at it. Still, I never missed the World Series in those days.
The 1971 World Series stands out as my all-time favorite. The Pittsburgh Pirates took down the Baltimore Orioles in seven games, and the biggest reason I was rooting for them? Roberto Clemente.
Clemente was the definition of a five-tool player—he could hit for power and average, run the bases, field like no other, and had a rocket for an arm. I was lucky enough to see legends like Carl Yastrzemski play in person, but if I could go back in time, I’d be in the stands for every game of that ‘71 series just to watch Clemente.
Then came December 31, 1972. With everyone ready to celebrate New Years, on the TV the news broke that Roberto Clemente had died in a plane crash while delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. He didn't want recognition for this charity work - he just believed in helping people.
I was a newspaper boy at the time and had seen the headlines over the past few years announcing the deaths of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison. But none of them hit me like Roberto Clemente's passing.
I didn't have many posters of sports stars on my walls growing up but I did have a poster of Roberto Clemente, and it was a very sad day when I eventually took it down. Roberto Clemente was the best baseball player I ever saw play.
Roberto was more than a baseball legend. He was a man who lived with purpose.
Clemente in His Own Words:
🗣️ “Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.”
🗣️ “I am convinced that God wanted me to be a baseball player. I was born to play baseball.”
Clemente gave everything - on the field and in life. That's why he's still remembered, not just as one of baseball's greatest, but as one of its finest human beings.
If you want to watch a good movie and a true story about 2 brothers seeing Roberto Clemente get his 3000th hit, then watch Chasing 3000 - At one point it was on Netflix, starring Ray Liotta.
